No designer's education is complete without an understanding of the gemstones and precious metals they are working with. This largely theoretical course enables students to understand the origins and rarity of the precious elements used in jewellery today. The  Fundamentals of Gemmology

Students receive extensive hands-on experience with many natural and synthetic, uncut and faceted gemstones, simulants and assembled stones and gem set jewellery. As well as printed course materials this course includes the essential tools of the trade: A jeweller's loupe, gem tweezers and gem cloth.

Course Synopsis:

The Fundamentals of Gemmology Certificate course is designed for sales professionals, trade members and individuals passionate about the jewellery they create or wear. Divided into three broad sections, it covers the essentials of coloured gems, diamonds and jewellery; each student will gain valuable information to set them apart from most jewellery designers and sales personnel in the region.

Students explore a variety of gemmological subjects such as gemstone classification, identification of gemstones and how professionals value and document these rare materials. The program introduces common industry terms and accurate loupe-handling and observation skills.

Beyond the facts associated with the science of gemmology, this course also focuses on dispelling common myths that surround gems and allows students to witness, handle and differentiate many imitations and compare them to their natural counterparts. Finally common sales techniques are covered to enhance the effectiveness of sales professionals and prepare designers to make informed purchases.
